R&B star Ciara has been awarded citizenship of Benin, a West African nation, after tracing her ancestral roots to the country.

On July 26, 2025, she received her certificate of citizenship during a ceremony marking the United Nations Day for Women and Girls of African Descent.

Ciara shared her excitement on Instagram, posting clips from the ceremony and captioning the post “Je suis béninoise” (I am Beninese).

She was welcomed by President Patrice Talon and representatives from the Office of Benin Tourism, and expressed her gratitude to the people of Benin for embracing her.

She wrote: “July 26, history was made.

On this year’s United Nations International Day of Women and Girls of African Descent, I was honored to receive Beninese citizenship, becoming the first person in the world granted nationality under this new initiative!

To be welcomed by His Excellency President Patrice Talon, the Office of Benin Tourism, and the beautiful people of Benin is a moment I will never forget.

Thank you Benin for opening your arms and your heart to me. See you soon
