Nigerian music star David Adeleke, better known as Davido, recently shared his thoughts on the worldwide popularity of afrobeats music.
He spoke at a panel discussion organized by Hiptv, which included the United States Advisory Council on Africa Diaspora Engagement and Leaders in Nigeria’s Creative Industries.
Davido emphasized the genre’s growing influence, stating, “Afrobeats Artists are selling the same tickets as Drake.” This comparison to one of the world’s biggest pop stars underscores the genre’s global appeal.
The singer also highlighted the potential financial impact of afrobeats success. “Now one song as an afrobeat artist can change your generation,” Davido said, suggesting that a hit afrobeats track could create significant wealth for an artist and their family.
In addition to celebrating the genre’s achievements, Davido offered advice to up-and-coming artists. He encouraged them to work together rather than seeking collaborations with international stars. “When you collaborate with your friends, they put their all,” he explained, emphasizing the value of local partnerships.
