Seun Kuti has clarified his position after some Wizkid fans dragged his late father, Fela Anikulapo‑Kuti, into debates about the Nigerian superstar’s success
In a video, Seun acknowledged Wizkid’s achievements, saying, “Wizkid is the greatest artist in the world, I can say Wizkid is the greatest artist of all time.”
However, he questioned why some fans feel the need to add Fela’s name into the conversation. “If you want Wizkid to be great, he’s the greatest. I agree with you. Leave my father’s name out of the discussion,” he emphasized.
Seun explained that Fela’s legacy is unique and deeply rooted in cultural and political history. Unlike some fans’ comparisons, his family has never used his father’s name to diminish other global icons like Bob Marley or Aretha Franklin.
“Go to Jamaica, South Africa, America—you don’t hear anyone comparing current stars to Bob Marley, Hugh Masekela, or James Brown. Only in Nigeria does Fela’s name get dragged into every debate,” he noted.
He also stressed that the family remains humble and avoids placing Fela above others, saying, “We don’t cross our lane. But they always find a reason to drag this man down.”
Seun’s comments have sparked discussions online about respecting Fela’s legacy while appreciating the accomplishments of contemporary artists like Wizkid
