President Bola Tinubu has honored Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, with significant rewards following their historic triumph at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Championship in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.
At a special reception held Monday evening at the State House Banquet Hall in Abuja, Vice President Kashim Shettima, representing the President, announced that each player would receive $100,000, a three-bedroom flat, and the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON).
Members of the coaching and technical crew were also recognized, receiving $50,000 each, a flat, and the same national honour for their contributions to the team’s success.
Commending the team’s achievement, Vice President Shettima described their victory as a symbol of Nigerian resilience and unity.
“You have brought immense pride to Nigeria. Your excellence on the court has once again put our nation on the global map for sporting greatness,” he said.
Led by Head Coach Rena Wakama, D’Tigress secured their fifth consecutive AfroBasket title—and seventh overall—after defeating Mali 78–64 in the final at the Palais des Sports de Treichville. The win also extended their unbeaten streak in the tournament to 29 games, a run that began in 2017.
The team arrived at the Presidential Villa around 5:00 p.m. and was received by top dignitaries, including First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu, Wife of the Vice President Nana Shettima, and Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila. Lawmakers such as Senator Garba Maidoki and Hon. Kabiru Amadou, chairmen of the Senate and House Committees on Sports, respectively, were also present.
The reception for D’Tigress came one week after President Tinubu celebrated the Super Falcons for their tenth Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title in Morocco, signaling a growing commitment to women’s sports.
