‘That is enough’ – Ademola Lookman admits Super Eagles wanted to be kings of Africa

Ademola Lookman has revealed that the Super Eagles entered the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations with the clear ambition of lifting the trophy.

Nigeria settled for a podium finish after beating Egypt 4-2 on penalties on Saturday night, with the Atalanta forward keeping his composure to convert the decisive spot kick.

Before the semifinals, the three-time African champions were the only team in the tournament with a perfect record, winning five consecutive matches.

However, that perfect run ended in heartbreaking fashion as Nigeria lost to hosts Morocco in a penalty shootout, missing out on a place in the AFCON final.

One of the tournament favourites after a strong group-stage performance, Nigeria viewed the bronze medal match as an opportunity to secure a top-three finish.

Speaking to beIN SPORTS after the game, Lookman said the team’s aim was always to win the trophy.

“Everyone wanted to win the gold medal, we came for the trophy but it didn’t happen. We leave that tournament with the bronze medal, and that is enough,” he said.

Lookman finished AFCON 2025 with three goals and four assists, more than any other player in the tournament. His performance has put him in contention for a place in the official team of the tournament.

Lookman insisted that the Super Eagles did many things right in Morocco.

“It was a good competition from us. We scored a lot of goals, we created a lot of chances. We played some good football. We can be proud of what we have done,” Lookman said after the game with Egypt.

The Atalanta winger also praised the unity within the team. “There’s unity in the team. We fought for each other, long may it continue,” he added.

This marks the ninth time the Super Eagles have finished third in the Africa Cup of Nations, following similar finishes in 1976, 1978, 1992, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2010 and 2019.
