Spotify introduces direct messaging feature

Spotify is rolling out a new direct messaging feature that lets users share music, podcasts, and audiobooks with each other without leaving the app.

The feature, called Messages, is launching this week in “select markets” and will be available on mobile for both Free and Premium users aged 16 and above.

Users can access Messages by tapping the share icon while listening to a song, podcast, or audiobook in the Now Playing view and selecting a friend to send it to. Sharing is possible with people on the same Spotify plan or other users previously interacted with through Spotify features like Jams, Blends, and Collaborative Playlists.

The aim is to centralize content recommendations that typically happen over texts, social media, or other messaging apps, making it easier to track and revisit shared audio. Shared content is stored in a Messages inbox, accessible under the profile picture in the top-left corner of the app. Messages support one-on-one conversations, text, emoji reactions, and are protected with industry-standard encryption.

Users have control over their interactions: they can accept or reject requests, block others, or opt out of Messages entirely. They can also report messages or accounts by holding down on content, while Spotify will actively scan for unlawful or harmful material and review reported chats.

It remains unclear if artist accounts will be able to use Messages to interact with fans. Spotify says the feature is meant to complement social sharing on platforms like Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, Snapchat, and TikTok rather than replace them. The addition is notable for being available to free users, potentially opening the door for more direct user-to-user interactions on the platform in the future.
