Nollywood star Funke Akindele has shared a personal struggle that led her to seek therapy for the first time.
During her 2023 political campaign for Deputy Governor of Lagos State, she faced harsh criticism, including mockery about her marital status.
A particular video where women ridiculed her for not having a husband broke her down, prompting her to realize the need for professional help.
She now encourages others to speak up about their emotional struggles, highlighting the importance of seeking help when needed.
She said: “There was one video I watched where women were mocking me for not having a husband, and I want to do politics. I broke down and cried. I told myself I needed to speak to a therapist, and I felt better,”
“Right from the scratch, I’ve always known that therapy was important, but never submitted to it because I didn’t want them to carry my gist. I kept acting strong while they were throwing everything at me,” “I want to advise you out there that it is very important to speak up,”
Despite previously believing in the importance of therapy, Akindele had resisted it due to fears of public gossip.
