Nigerian politician and actor Desmond Elliot has revealed that he narrowly escaped an attack during the 2020 EndSARS protests, describing the incident as one of the scariest moments of his life.
Speaking in an interview on Nollywood On Radio, the Lagos State lawmaker recounted being trapped in his Surulere constituency office during the government-imposed curfew and suddenly coming under attack by unknown assailants.
“I have never been so scared in my life,” Elliot said. “When there was a curfew during the EndSARS period, a lot of bad boys came into Surulere and because of the curfew I could not go home.”
He explained that he had been unable to return to his home in Lekki and decided instead to spend the night at his office in Surulere. While watching TV, he suddenly heard his landlady’s daughter outside yelling, disassociating him from the premises.
Moments later, chaos erupted. “I knew there was a problem when a bottle with fuel and fire was thrown into my office and it caught fire,” he said. “I had to call the chief of staff for help. It was horrible.”
The 2020 EndSARS protests, which erupted nationwide against police brutality, also put Elliot under intense public scrutiny. His comments during that period drew widespread criticism and ridicule online, with many Nigerians labeling him “Twitter’s number one scapegoat” and using him as the subject of countless memes and online banter.
