Funke Akindele’s Behind The Scenes becomes highest grossing movie ever

Nollywood star Funke Akindele has made history once again as her latest film, Behind The Scenes, surpassed ₦2 billion at the box office, setting a new benchmark for African cinema

The milestone was confirmed on Monday by FilmOne Entertainment, the film’s distributor, in a post on X, revealing that ticket sales for the title have now reached ₦2,103,039,706.

FilmOne described the achievement as “breaking and shattering records,” noting that Behind The Scenes is the first Nollywood production to cross the ₦2 billion mark in Africa. The film has also become the highest-grossing Nollywood release in the United Kingdom and Ireland.

The distributor credited the film’s success with cementing Akindele’s status as one of Africa’s most commercially successful filmmakers, describing her as the highest-grossing writer, director, and producer in West African cinema history. FilmOne also highlighted that she has now ranked number one at the African box office for three consecutive years—a feat unprecedented in the region’s film industry.

Thanking cinema audiences for their support, FilmOne said the film’s success is “more than a commercial win but a cultural movement,” driven by loyal viewers and strong word-of-mouth.

Behind The Scenes had previously crossed the ₦1 billion threshold and later climbed to ₦1.77 billion, placing it among the most successful Nollywood films of all time before reaching this historic figure.

The film features Scarlet Gomez in the lead role and an ensemble cast including Funke Akindele, Iyabo Ojo, Destiny Etiko, Tobi Bakre, Uche Montana, Uzor Arukwe, Ini Dima-Okojie, Adebowale ‘Mr Macaroni’, Ibrahim Chatta, Kamo State, and other prominent talents, blending established stars with rising actors to deliver a blockbuster cinematic experience.
