Former Super Falcons captain Onome Ebi has officially retired from professional football, bringing an end to a remarkable career that spanned over 20 years
Ebi made the announcement on her X account on Wednesday night, reflecting on her journey and expressing gratitude for her experiences in the sport.
“Today, I officially retire from professional football. The journey has been filled with challenges, victories, and lessons that shaped me into who I am today. Though I hang up my boots, my purpose in the game continues—to give back, to guide, and to be a voice for players across Africa and beyond. Thank you,” she wrote.
The 43-year-old defender began her career in 2001 with Omidiran Babes before playing for Bayelsa Queens and later moving to Europe to join Swedish side Piteå IF.
Ebi holds the record as the most capped Super Falcons player with 109 appearances and is the only African footballer to feature in six FIFA Women’s World Cup tournaments. She also won the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations four times — in 2010, 2014, 2016, and 2018 — cementing her status as one of the most decorated players in Nigerian football history.
