Approved Labs for Mohbad’s paternity test unable to conduct DNA

Oladayo Ogungbe, legal counsel for the Aloba family in the ongoing DNA proceedings at the Magistrate Court of Ikorodu, Lagos State, has revealed that two of the three laboratories approved to conduct paternity tests on late musician Ilerioluwa Aloba, known as Mohbad, and his alleged son, Liam, are unable to handle post-mortem DNA testing on embalmed bodies

Ogungbe explained that since Mohbad, who passed away in September 2023, was embalmed, the intended DNA examination requires extraction of tissue samples from his remains.

On February 24, 2026, Magistrate B.A. Sonuga ordered that the paternity test be carried out in three laboratories agreed upon by the parties and the court to ensure transparency and credibility. The proceedings also directed that the collection and transfer of samples be supervised by the Social Welfare Officer in the presence of both parties and their legal representatives.

The approved laboratories were selected through a collaborative process involving the court and both parties. They include DNA Diagnostics Centre in Fairfield, Ohio, United States, nominated by the applicant; Alpha Bio Labs in Warrington, United Kingdom, submitted by Mohbad’s wife, Wunmi; and Advanced Histopathology Laboratory Limited, London, United Kingdom, independently chosen by the court through the Welfare Officer.

Ogungbe stated that prior to sample collection, representatives of Mohbad’s father, Joseph Aloba, made inquiries to confirm whether the laboratories could perform post-mortem DNA testing involving tissue from embalmed remains. Responses from Alpha Bio Labs and Advanced Histopathology Laboratory Limited indicated they do not conduct such tests.

The Aloba family’s lawyer added that an Affidavit of Facts, including the laboratories’ correspondence, has been filed in court to document these developments for transparency.

He emphasized, “It is therefore incorrect and misleading to suggest that Mr Joseph Aloba deliberately selected laboratories lacking the competence to conduct tissue-based DNA testing.”
