Rapper Tory Lanez has been rushed to the hospital after being stabbed 14 times in a California prison.
The Canadian hip-hop star, whose real name is Daystar Peterson, was attacked by another inmate early Tuesday morning inside a housing unit at the California Correctional Institution in Tehachapi, roughly 75 miles north of Los Angeles, officials told the BBC.
The 32-year-old reportedly suffered multiple stab wounds to his back, torso, head, and face, with injuries so severe that both of his lungs collapsed, according to a statement posted to his Instagram account. He was temporarily placed on a breathing apparatus but is now breathing on his own.
“Despite being in pain, he is talking normally, in good spirits, and deeply thankful to God that he is pulling through,” the post said.
The stabbing occurred around 7:20 a.m. local time, said Pedro Calderón Michel of the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. Prison staff provided immediate first aid before Lanez was transported to a nearby medical facility for further treatment.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident. No motive for the attack has been disclosed.
Lanez is currently serving a 10-year prison sentence following his 2023 conviction for shooting fellow rapper Megan Thee Stallion in 2020. Prosecutors said he fired at her feet during an argument after a pool party at Kylie Jenner’s Hollywood home. Megan, whose real name is Megan Pete, required surgery to remove bullet fragments.
Lanez, who denied the charges and did not apologize, was convicted on three felony counts, including assault with a semi-automatic firearm.
His sentencing drew widespread attention, with prominent artists like 50 Cent and Iggy Azalea voicing opinions and even requesting leniency on his behalf.
Before his incarceration, Lanez had released seven US top 10 albums. From behind bars, he has hinted at a forthcoming album titled Peterson.
